An Interview With Kate James – Incredibly Talented Coach

What a wonderful way to start the week by sharing with you one of our most recent & gorgeous interviews with Kate James.

Kate James is an incredibly talented  coach, meditation teacher, speaker and writer who specialises in working with people who want to live creative, meaningful lives.  Kate James is also the Founder of Total Balance and through the work of her team, they are helping their clients create more meaningful & purpose driven lives.

She is a low-key kind of coach. She’ll help you feel motivated but not in a high-fiving ‘ra-ra’ kind of way. Kate James’ approach is often described by clients as intuitive, practical, and sometimes even spiritual. She draws on philosophies from mindfulness, positive psychology, ACT, creativity, and neuropsychology.

Their philosophy is that ‘balance is ultimately about your state of mind’.   I was intrigued and excited when I finally sat down with Kate James to pick her brains on what has been her greatest challenge, and who has been her biggest inspiration.

The best part of my job is…

It’s a few things. I love the feeling that I’m genuinely able to make a difference in people’s lives every day.

I’m passionate about mindfulness so I never tire of learning about it and teaching others how to use the principles to live more purposeful, meaningful and creative lives.

I really love the people I work with – the conversations I have with my clients teach me about myself too and they remind me that the world is full of the most incredibly talented beautiful people.

I’m a big believer in small business so I love helping clients transition out of the corporate world into their own creative venture.

I chose to enter this field of work because…

I spent a long time working as a business manager for creative businesses (film makers and architects mostly) and while I loved the people I worked with, I wanted to make a difference in a more personal way.

I had also struggled with self-belief while I was growing up and after learning meditation, I discovered this whole new way of being in the world. I wanted to help people who were going through the same struggles that I’d been through.

The greatest challenge in my career has been…

Oh there’ve been plenty!! In the early days, public speaking was a huge challenge (I love it now but it took a while). I’ve always struggled with maintaining balance myself (they say you teach best what you most need to learn and I’m a bit of a workaholic) and while it’s easier these days, in the early days of having my own business the financial stuff was a bit of a roller coaster ride.

The funniest misconceptions about my industry/company/brand are….

That all coaches are ‘ra-ra’ kind of coaches and into high fiving, highly motivational stuff. This is not my style at all and for the first year in my business I worried that I’d find it hard to be successful because of that. As it has turned out, most my clients are introverts (like me) so they’re happy with a quieter approach.

The most influential person in my career has been…

I can think of many authors who have had a huge impact on me but probably the biggest influence comes from people closer than that.

I have an amazingly supportive husband, Chris and our two beautiful daughters are wise and funny and creative – collectively these three people have the biggest impact on my happiness and the decisions I make in my business every day.

If I could give one piece of advice to my 18-year-old self, it would be….

I’d say believe in yourself (I wrote my book for my 18-year-old self).

I would say be kinder to yourself. Don’t judge yourself so harshly.

My greatest achievement has been…

Getting published would have to be the greatest achievement. It’s something I have wanted since I was a little girl

The greatest personal challenge I have over come is…

I’d have to say the public speaking. Years ago, I went to Toastmasters a couple of times to get some practise speaking and there were a couple of guys there who were great speakers. I asked them “why do you come here when you don’t need the practise?” and they told me they just loved speaking. I thought they were crazy but now I’ve learned to love it too – it’s a genuine gift to have people willing to listen to you and the best way to share what you’re passionate about with the world.

I don’t understand why…

People want so much material stuff. The more I learn about simple living the more I think it’s the way we should live.

I try to relax by…

Meditating, doing yoga, walking along the beach, having a glass of wine 🙂

My biggest fear is…

Going back to work for someone else. I absolutely love the variety and freedom that comes with working for yourself

I can’t live without…

A proper teapot and real tea leaves.

I really wish I had…

More time to spend in nature. In an ideal world, we’d spend half of our time living out of town

The greatest lesson I have learnt is…

To be kind to myself.

If I had one super power, it would be…

To be able to give people the ability to see things from another person’s perspective. Imagine how much more peaceful the world would be if we were really able to understand each other’s point of view.

If I could invite four people to a dinner party, they’d be…

Brene Brown, Danny Bhoy and my kids. I love anyone with a great sense of humour.
