The Daily Guru Team

As a manager or business leader, you want to get the most out of your employees. Your employees are key to the running of your business, and if they’re happy, healthy and efficient in the workplace then your business will be better for it. As a leader, it’s important to motivate your team to achieve great things, especially if things have taken a dip recently.

Learn to help your team become more productive and excel at what they do with these tips for getting the best out of your team.

Give them opportunities to talk

Managers can often feel disconnected from their staff, but a change in your management approach can change that. By giving your employees time where they can voice their concerns and share their ideas with you, you’ll help develop mutual trust and respect and help employees feel as though they’re being listened to. An ‘open door’ policy is a great one to have, but if you’re a busy exec then some regular drop-in hours could help. Meanwhile, regular team meetings and more informal gatherings can help with the flow of communication and ensure everyone feels informed and valued in the workplace.

Simplify processes

Sometimes, the issue that could be holding your employees back from doing their best work – is you. Anything from slow and unresponsive tech to systems and processes that are clunky and time-consuming could hinder your team from doing their best. Talk to them about the things that frustrate them the most about doing their work and find solutions to make it easier. Some fixes can be as easy as creating the perfect work schedule or moving collaborative working to the cloud to help your staff save time and boost their performance. Being able to do things better and quicker will not only be an asset for your staff, but your business too.

Give them more responsibility

It can be difficult to know what your team are capable of until you push them. By presenting new challenges and granting additional responsibility, you could help bring out the best in your employees. Being given more responsibility helps your team to grow and develop, and can also take some of your own responsibilities away from you to free up your time for other things. Learn to trust your employees more – it’s in your interest and theirs!

Play to people’s strengths

If you were leading a sports team, you would put people in positions that best suit their talents and strengths to stand the best chance of winning. Shouldn’t it be the same in your team? Today, workers are more likely to have multiple sets of skills, as well as talents they might not bring to the workplace. Find out what those skills and talents are and help your team to bring them to the workplace. People can feel more confident doing things that they love and know they’re good at, which could see you boost performance and ensure excellent results for your business.

Set goals that everyone can be passionate about

Salary can be a big motivator for employees, but having a cause to be passionate about can help increase job satisfaction and boost your chances of getting results. Set goals that will inspire passion in your team so that they can contribute to the overall bigger picture – their mindset will change and they’ll want to deliver results for you and your business, and not just to get their paycheck at the end of the month. This is a practice to instill in employees from the outset, so make a start by setting goals for new employees who come through your door to inspire them to deliver.

Brainstorming can be a fantastic way to help your team bring new and exciting ideas to the table. Brainstorming methods can help you come up with ideas for anything from small projects to long-term strategies and give everyone a chance to contribute. Through a brainstorm, you’ll be bringing your teams together, which can inspire bonding and closer-knit working to help your team to gel together and deliver results. Encourage brainstorms on a smaller scale too to help teams get into the habit of sharing their ideas with others.

Take care of their health and wellbeing

Workers that are happy and healthy are more likely to stay with a company than if they were feeling exhausted, stressed and undervalued. Workplace wellness should be a priority for all business leaders and shows that you care about your team on a personal level. Providing excellent health benefits as well as initiatives like reduced gym memberships and putting out free fruit and healthy snacks are just some ways you can actively improve employee wellbeing. Allowing people to work flexibly and tackling stress head-on will make your workplace a much happier place to work, benefiting your existing staff and making an attractive offer for new staff looking to achieve the right work/life balance.

Get them out of the office

It’s good for teams to blow off some steam and spend time together outside of the office. While you don’t have to spend every Friday night having post-work drinks, some social activities now and then can help people feel more at ease as well as prove rewarding for hard work. Whether you decide to take everyone out for lunch or arrange fun social activities that everyone can take part it – putting some effort into socializing with your team will help build better relationships. Your workplace should be somewhere that people should enjoy being in, and adding that social element can make a big difference.

Improve your own motivation

It’s all well and good to preach motivation on your team, but if you’re not feeling motivated yourself – how can you expect them to be? If you’ve been feeling a bit lost and in need of a boost – there are steps you can take to increase your motivation. Start by taking a break from it all to clear your head and get some time to think about your next moves. Strive to be more positive and boost your productivity by knuckling down in the morning and working through your task list. Setting yourself some goals will be a big benefit to your attitude and give yourself something to work towards to help you find your motivation again.

Feedback and reward

Often employees don’t know if they’re doing a good job or not. Having regular feedback can inspire confidence, while also making sure that any performance issues are ironed out early. An email congratulating someone on a job well done or a mention in a team meeting can have a huge impact on that person’s confidence and make them feel rewarded for their hard work. A rewards scheme can also help to encourage better productivity, and from bonuses to lunch on the boss – rewards will certainly help your team feel valued for their hard work.

Being able to motivate your team to do great things is a sign of a successful leader. Help your team to be the best they can be by giving them the tools they need to succeed and having faith in them to do a good job. Your workplace will benefit from having staff who are motivated, productive and happy, so look at ways you can improve things in your workplace to encourage better team performance.
