With so many crazy things happening in the world and stressful situations that have become a part of our lives, anxiety attacks have become more common than ever before. Sometimes, they can be so intense and scary, it feels like they are completely out of your control.

However, there are ways in which you can stop and prevent anxiety attacks, and guided meditation is one of them. If this sounds interesting to you, here are a couple of things you should know about anxiety attacks and how to control them through guided meditation.

What is an anxiety attack?

Anxiety can be defined as a state of uncertainty and fear due to the anticipation of something bad, regardless of whether the event or situation you’re anticipating is actually real or not. In other words, when you become afraid that something could endanger you or hurt you in any way, the fear of expecting that something to happen makes you anxious.

When you become anxious, your body responds by giving you a boost of energy and awareness, which is supposed to help you deal with the expected threat by either fighting or fleeing. When that response is high enough, you experience an anxiety attack – a state of mind accompanied by extreme changes, like hyperventilation, chest pain, shaking, sweating, and feeling generally detached from your environment.

What is guided meditation?

Guided meditation is a form of meditation where a narrator guides you through your mind to help you overcome your fears and improve your lifestyle in some way. Unlike hypnosis that is based on specific words and suggestions, meditation is about using your own imagination in order reach the desired effect. Since the brain doesn’t distinguish between a real situation and an imagined one, the experience you have while meditating feels just as real as any other actual experience. However, if you think that hypnosis might suit you better, there is safe and professional hypnotherapy in Sydney that might be just the thing you need in order to change your lifestyle for the better.

Furthermore, what guided meditation does is help you replace bad images and memories with new, better ones, which helps you react more positively the next time they appear. For example, if you want to become good at public speaking, but you have bad experiences related to speaking in public, the chances are that you won’t be able to reach your full potential due to the limitations that are the result of those bad experiences.

This is where guided meditation comes into play by altering those memories of bad experiences and turning them into something more positive, which gives you a better chance of becoming good at whatever it is that interests you. In short, it’s all about your own imagination and the power to channel it the right way.

How guided meditation can help you

Guided meditation has many benefits, one of them being the ability to reduce anxiety. It trains your brain to see your thoughts differently. So instead of worrying about the future and pondering about the past, you’d recognize your negative thoughts for what they truly are – just thoughts. This makes it much easier for you to let go of those negative thoughts and consequently, become less anxious.

Meditation can also improve your mood by increasing the levels of serotonin in your body. Serotonin is a chemical that makes you feel happy. Moreover, it reduces the amount of cortisol, which is a hormone that makes you stressed out, depressed, and anxious.

Next, if you meditate regularly, you can reduce the size of your amygdala – the area of the brain that is associated with anxiety, fear, and stress. Guided meditation can also increase the flow of blood to the brain, which leads to improved neural connections and enhanced neuroplasticity.

So, what’s the catch?

You might be wondering why there aren’t more people meditating when there are so many benefits of meditation. The thing is, it’s one of those things that are simple but not easy, because quieting your mind can be much more difficult than it sounds. This is why many people give up before they even get to see the results.

This is also why guided meditation might be just the thing for you – you wouldn’t have to do it alone. You’d be following a voice of an experienced meditation teacher who would help you reach the right meditative state and achieve the desired effect.

If you often feel anxious and don’t really know how to deal with your anxiety, consider yoga and guided meditation as your weapon. It can help you change the way you think, feel better, overcome your fears, and finally get over your anxiety attacks once and for all.
